Green Bean Powder Mask

Hey guys!

Today, I’ll be telling you one of my beauty secrets :3

Oooh, a secret!

Okay, okay, I’ll tell you now.

Let me tell you what I do whenever I get really bad breakouts. I don’t use skincare products during really bad breakouts except cleanser once in the morning and at night, like mosturisers and whatnot. Instead, I turn to natural methods to get rid of the acne!

To get rid of the dirty bacteria:

I use green bean powder, mixed in water, and apply it like a mask. I bought mine from an organic health food store which has barley and rice bits mixed in for added whitening properties that doubles as a scrub.

It is located near Bukit Batok MRT and goes by the name of ‘Vitality’. My mum bought this for me though, so I’m not sure of the exact location. You should be able to buy it in supermarkets though, as it is used in cooking. You don’t actually need the mixed version. The powder I used last time was purchased from NTUC.

DO NOT BUY ‘GREEN BEAN FLOUR’. It looks very similar. If you don’t see any green bean powder, it goes by an alternative name- mung bean powder, which is the same thing. It should look something like this.

I usually use lukewarm water because I’ve heard the effect is better (opening pores and all) but some people use cold water to reduce the inflammation and redness. If you really want to do that, I suggest you wrap ice in a thin towel and hold it to the inflamed areas (the towel is to prevent you from getting frostbite) after washing off the green bean mask.

This can double as a face scrub due to its texture or you can leave it on as a mask. It will harden and make your face feel tight. You can choose to either peel it off or wash it off.

Anyway, pour a bit of powder onto a small dish and add a bit of water. You should not get a watery mixture. It should look like a thick liquid (I will upload pictures soon)

If you peel it off you get the added bonus of getting rid of dead skin and blackheads on your nose (make sure you apply a suitably thick layer so you can peel it off).

However, if you have dry skin, or a really bad case of acne, it would be better to just wash it off to avoid damaging your skin. I would suggest using warm/lukewarm water to wash off this mask as it clings on well. Too well for my liking when I am in a hurry sometimes ._.

DO NOT USE YOUR NAILS TO TRY AND GET IT OFF!

Pat dry after washing your face and if you like, you can apply your preferred mosturiser or follow up with a honey and sugar mask! (I will write about this next time)

Loves: Reduces pores, blackheads, inflammation and swelling, removes dry skin and firms your face. Leaves face feeling smooth and soft

Hates: Hard to wash off at times

Rating: 9/10

The Body Shop Ginger Sparkle Body Butter

Today, I’ve decided to deviate from masks and review The Body Shop’s Ginger Sparkle Body Butter!

Although Christmas is over, The Body Shop has yet to clear their Christmas displays, and post-Christmas sales are always worth waiting for! (most shops do it to clear stock)(I will upload pictures when my DSLR is back from repairs. Long story. Meanwhile, satisfy yourself with a picture I took from Google. Many apologies!)

The main components of this body butter are:

Ginger root extract

Shea Butter (Community Fair Trade)

So, if you have been eyeing the Shea Body Butter for some time but want a clean, rich scent, this alternative should do well!

It is suited for all skin types, so this is not as oily or greasy as some of the heavy, ‘for dry skin’ body butters.

The label on the container states 24 hours (is that how long the moisturising effect lasts for? Or that you can use it any time?)

I can understand why they call this ‘Ginger Sparkle’. When you take a whiff of it, you inhale a sharp, spicy scent, and you can’t help but take another sniff. Truthfully, I bought it for the scent rather than its moisturising properties. 😛

Anyway, after I rubbed it into my skin (calves), it really provided a lot of moisture without being too oily or greasy. It sinks in easily and I love the smooth, soft feeling your skin attains. I moved around a lot, so that may be why the ‘moisturised’ feeling lasted for only two hours. The scent easily lasted up to 6 hours in comparison, becoming more subtle as it wore off.

The smell is heavenly but for some people, it might seem a bit strong. A little goes a long way! I usually rub it at the pulse points and a little at the back of my neck when I go out. If you adore this scent and would like to wear it out, I would suggest you apply it 30 minutes before you go out for a more subtle scent! It smells like gingerbread and vanilla and bakeries… YUM!

Sadly, there are no cheaper alternatives online as The Body Shop does not distribute their products to other stores. However, there are 20% off sales ongoing, and I managed to get it cheap in Brunei! There are similar sales in other countries where the Body Shop has set up stores, and I’m sure that even if this is not for you, you can easily find something else you like among the three new Xmas flavours:

Vanilla, Ginger Sparkle and Cranberry! Cranberry has a more mature smell, and Vanilla smells like butter and bakeries. Good enough to eat! I didn’t buy it because I didn’t want to smell like a cake ._.

My boyfriend likes this scent, too, and as it is not exactly a girly scent, why not let your man borrow it? Of course, everyone has their own tastes, and this may not be for everyone. Do head to your nearest Body Shop store to try it out!

Loves: Scent, mosturising but not oily/greasy, sinks in well

Hates: The smell might be too strong for your tastes, so use sparingly or apply and wait a bit before going out

Rating: 7.5/10

Would I buy it again?: This will last for a long, long time. I can’t wait for next year’s Christmas scents! No point buying the same thing twice anyway if it lasts for a long time

Price: Around 21.50 BDN in Brunei (currency equal to Singapore) after 20% discount. And I didn’t use the membership card so members, an additional 10% off! It is more expensive in Singapore, 32.90 SGD if I am not wrong which comes to around 26.30 SGD after discount (membership discount not included in calculations). This makes this cheaper than all the other body butters!! Yay!

Skinfood Rice Mask Wash Off

Another update today! 🙂 Aren’t you lucky~I’ll be reviewing Skinfood’s Rice Mask Wash Off!

I put my Lipice balm there for height comparison! Cos when I got it I was like ‘OMG WHY SO SMALL’. Plus they cheat and the base is elevated =..= lll But after using it I realised it really lasts a long time so no complaints now 🙂

cheat lol ._.

For some reason, it feels kinda oily so I was afraid it would cause my face to break out 😮 I guess its really moisturising! It claims to be make your skin brighter so I guess what it does is whiten and slough off the dead skin 🙂 the after-effect is similar to the Holika Holika Kiwi Peel-off Cream (click to go) and my skin feels smooth and soft!

I‘m not sure if it really brightens as it claims, but I have been getting fairer! To be fair, I am using Hada Labo’s Arbutin Whitening Lotion, so I cannot be sure if it really works. But my skin feels great and moisturised after applying this mask, a bit like Hada Labo’s Super Hyaluronic Acid Lotion, so that tells you how great this is 🙂

After you wash it off, any oily feeling is gone *phew* and you are left with soft baby skin~I rub this in upon application then let it sit for 15-20min as recommended. You can let it sit longer or shorter if you want, I tried it for about 3min another day with about the same results, then for 40min for another. Leaving it on longer just makes the ‘soft, bouncy’ feeling last longer, that’s all.

Remember not to over-use this even though the rice husks are quite gentle! At most three times a week! I really like the fragrance of this mask- it has the underlying scent of cooked rice but has this perfume-y smell that is really quite pleasant, too. It reminds me of The Face Shop’s Rice Cleanser.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Loves: Pleasant smell, cheap, moisturising

Hates: Feels kinda oily at first but no major issues

Rating: 7.5/10

Would I buy it again?: I think it will last a long time… and I have my sights set on the Black Sugar Heating Mask and the Yoghurt Masks (Banana, Kiwi, Papaya… Papaya is good!)

Price: I got it for 7.80SGD online, and they sell it at around 26 SGD in stores. So buy it online!! Go to Qoo10 (click) and hope that it’s discount day 🙂 free samples too hehe

Holika Holika Smoothie Peeling Cream (Golden Kiwi)

Hey guys!

Today, I’ll be reviewing Holika Holika’s Smoothie Peeling Cream (Sunshine Golden Kiwi)!

This was part of my haul over the hols in Brunei. I know, no one goes there right ._.
and no global brands like Starbucks or Forever 21, can you believe it?

Thankfully, the Korean beauty industry have managed to set root and they are swarming all over in all the shopping malls (though there are about 4, 5 malls only).

You see brands like The Face Shop, Holika Holika, Tonymoly, Etude House, The Body Shop (not Korean though).

ANYWAY. Back to business.

You can see from the pictures that its kinda skin-coloured, with little beads of kiwi seeds and stuff for texture (to get rid of the dead skin I guess) then fades to a translucent-y shade of white. I usually apply a thin layer instead of a thick one cos it kinda flakes off and makes a mess when I try to peel it. *tsktsk*

So I just rub at it a bit then wash it off! But that’s just cos I’m lazy haha. Or maybe I’m supposed to apply a super-thick layer? I doubt so :/

Its near-impossible to peel off.

The mask is supposed to remove dead skin and dirt, and after trying it myself I’m amazed at how soft my skin feels.

Like all the dead skin has been removed and I’m left with soft, kissable baby skin! *squeals~* I try to restrict myself to use it only twice a week, but I’m so tempted to whip it out everyday, y’know? The smell is so delicious and it feels so refreshing… even when I put it on an oily face it just cleanses the oil and leaves it soft and clean!

It is totally my favourite mask now!

I was thinking about getting other one in this range, some kind of grape gel thing, but I’m so glad I stuck to my decision and got this instead! So happy 🙂 You must try it yourself to experience it 🙂

It’s very affordable here in Singapore, you know? Check out Kpoptown.com (click to go) for lower prices on Korean beauty products 🙂

(I realised I was totally ripped off when I paid 20 bucks for this ._. so don’t follow in my footsteps!)

Also, if you over-use this mask, your skin will start peeling off. So unsightly!

So don’t. 😛

*******************************************************************************************

Loves: Cheap price, effectiveness

Hates: None, but don’t over-use.

Rating: 9/10

Will I purchase it again?:

I think I’ll try other products first before making a decision… but I totally love this!!

Price:

I bought it for 20 BDN (currency same as S’pore) but don’t be fooled! The actual price is like 14SGD or cheaper. TSK! (I feel so stupid now)

Edit:

I went back to purchase it again, and this time I consulted the saleslady. Apparently a ‘peeling mask’ means that it helps to get rid of dead skin cells, and it should not be peeled off. You need to wash it off after you apply it, and it is best used as a gentle scrub and then let it sit, if you like, as a mask.

Thanks for reminding me!

The Face Shop Green Tea Phyto Powder Cleansing Foam

Today, I’ll be reviewing The Face Shop’s facial foam cleanser- Phyto Powder in Cleansing Foam (Green Tea). I’ve heard lots of raves about this cleanser and how it doesn’t dry out your skin etc.,

so I’ll put these claims to the test!

I chose it because I wanted something with a gentle, mild scent and this certainly smells like a hot cup of green tea, with your sushi!

Anyway, the product certainly lived up to its claims. After using it, the redness and swelling in certain trouble areas (my forehead and nose area) was reduced. You might feel a slight tingling, burning sensation but I left it there for half a minute after massaging it in because that sensation tells me it’s doing its job ^^ The burning sensation disappeared right after I rinsed it off, so it definitely does not irritate the skin (no redness or itchiness), and you are left with a cool, refreshing feeling!I’m starting to think that I could have left it on my face longer~ like a mask hehe

Product looks pale yellow under bright white light, but turns white and foamy after massaging.

As with all Face Shop cleansers, it produces a thick, creamy white foam so a little bit goes a long way! I used about two thumb-nails-sized (lol) and managed to work up a thick even layer over my face. *thumbs up*

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Loves: Cheap price, refreshing feeling, effectiveness- my zits were less red and swollen the next day!

Hates: None!

Rating: 8.5/10

Will I purchase it again?: Absolutely! Maybe other kinds in the same range… I wanted the Spearmint (for men though) for its gorgeous smell but it was all out :(((( *tsk tsk*

Price: 9.90 BDN (not sure about S’pore price ‘cos I purchased it in Brunei)However, it is a lot cheaper if you purchase it online. Check out Qoo10 (<– click to go). The Herb Day cleansers go down to 3.90SGD per tube on discount days!  (I know right)

The Body Shop Passionfruit Body Butter and Scrub

I just loooooove The Body Shop.
How could you not? You can smell the shop a mile away- those delicious, fruity smells! I love how they give out those small little sample containers during a new shop opening or for whatever occasion- I just run there and start sampling! I always come out smelling like I’ve just walked into a lovely tropical garden.
Back to the picture. This is the passionfruit body scrub (left) and the body butter. The body butter is actually pale purple, but you can’t really see it here. The scrub is quite gentle, and leaves your skin smelling nice, and soft to the touch; but like most scrubs you really don’t want to use it more than twice a week in case you rub too zealously and damage your skin. The body butter is suited for normal to dry skin, and I like it because its not oily. I’m thinking of getting the Shea butter for my calves because I have this really awful-looking ‘snakeskin’, but as for now this is fine.
Effectiveness: 8/10 for both
Overall rating: 9/10 for the scrub and 8/10 for the body butter
Price: SGD30.90 each (before membership discount)
Do you guys have any products from the Body Shop you love as well? 🙂 I’ll post more reviews next time!
UPDATE: The body scrubs and butters are on 30% discount now, so do snap them up quick!
